Often installing or changing mine fans can lead to injuries. It's a task that is time consuming as well as being labor and equipment intensive requiring up to 8 hours, 6 people, crane, forklift, cradle, and scissor lift. The ARVA Multi-Task Fan Handler completes the job in less than 3 hours using only 3 people and 2 pieces of equipment.
The ARVA Multi-Task Fan Handler is a safer way because it's so versatile in its movements. Placing a fan in just the right spot - the first time - becomes ordinary. Further safety is offered with the optional cable remote allowing the operator to stay in full view of the fan installer. And, with the Multi-Task's ability to move in any plane with the smallest of adjustments, there's no need for people to tug and push the fan into place saving time and reducing the chance of injuries.
There's two major parts to this unique and innovative piece of mining equipment: crane and manipulator head. A 4-section, hydraulically operated crane gives an extended reach of 21' and a retracted reach of just 6-½' making it ideal for tight spots. It reaches 20 degrees below horizontal to pick fans weighing up to 4,000 lbs. off pallets. They are carried up to 50 degrees above horizontal, 26' above the mine floor. Precise placement is enhanced with a crane rotation of 270 degrees. The ARVA Multi-Task Fan Handler crane can be mounted to an existing low profile mine crane or ordered with any of the ARVA low profile mine cranes. The Manipulator Head offers all the versatility for handling air circulation fans accommodating sizes from 18" to 54" in diameter.
Precise and safe placement is easier as head rotates 360 degrees continuously on any plane and moves 20 degrees backward and 52 degrees forward on the horizontal plane. These features make for easier installations especially into systems that are not on a 180 degrees horizontal plane.
"With versatility and maneuverability designed into the crane and manipulator head, it acts much like the Canada Arm used on Space Shuttles," said Fred Smith, President of ARVA Industries. "We call it a Multi-Task machine because it does so much more than handle fans. The crane hook turns it into an 8-½ ton capacity crane capable of safely handling fuel tanks. Greater operator versatility is offered with the optional radio remote controls. Other options in the design and testing phase include an offset work platform with a rotator and a bucket for cleaning edges of roadways. A tire changing adapter will allow maintenance personnel to change tires on location saving time," continued Smith. An informative video is available demonstrating its versatility and flexibility.
"Since The ARVA Multi-Task Fan Handler picks, rotates, and lifts, fewer people and equipment is required to handle fans. Tie this into a safer operation and the fact that it can be used for multiple tasks, it soon pays for itself time and time again. The ARVA Multi-Tasker will be one of the most cost effective machine in a mining companies' maintenance fleet," concluded Smith.
The ARVA Multi-Task Fan Handler was designed and built for the INCO Coleman operation near Sudbury, Ontario.
ARVA Industries has been designing and manufacturing specialized mine equipment for over 20 years. Recently, the company shipped 3 pieces of equipment for use the Big Dig in Boston: the Roof Panel Installer and two Tower Work Platforms. The Roof Panel Installer reduced the time to install roof panels by up to 800%. The Tower Platform, with over 651 square feet of work area, holds up to 10 people and loads weighing up to 20,000 lbs. The Work Platform reaches heights of 23' bringing along both electricity and air circuits for work tools. Access is readily available through telescoping staircase. The ARVA Tower Work Platform with its 360 continuous degrees rotation help companies bidding on repairing / upgrading bridges to be very competitive.
